COPA
is a
Good
Thing
Says
Brennan,
Jr.
August
10,
2008
Joe
Brennan,
Jr.
says
that
the
latest
ruling
in
regards
to
online
gambling
should
be
celebrated,
not
seen
as a
defeat.
Brennan,
founder
of
IMEGA.org,
says
the
3rd
Circuit
Court’s
decision
to
get
rid
of
the
Child
Online
Protection
Act
could
not
have
been
better
for
the
online
gambling
industry.
While
many
thought
that
COPA
was
necessary
to
protect
children
over
the
internet,
some
said
that
it
was
too
broad
in
its
scope
and
that
it
violated
the
First
Amendment.
Brennan,
running
an
organization
that
is
dedicated
to
the
right
of
privacy
and
freedoms
over
the
internet,
says
that
this
opens
doors
for
online
gambling
that
they
could
not
have
gone
through
before.
The
law
was
written
in
1998
and
was
viewed
by
some
as
unconstitutional.
It
was
meant
to
protect
children
from
sexual
material
and
other
objectionable
content
on
the
Internet.
The
court
said
that
they
had
to
come
up
with
a
less
restrictive
way
to
protect
children
from
inappropriate
content
online.
Those
fighting
against
the
law
said
that
it
was
impossible
for
anyone
to
offer
adult
content
because
there
was
no
real
way
to
lock
children
out
from
sites
they
should
not
be
looking
at.
Council
for
their
side
said
that
it
would
force
them
to
offer
only
family
friendly
sites,
and
that
wasn’t
right.
Brennan
says
that
there
is
probably
only
one
thing
that
the
conservatives
hate
more
than
online
gambling
and
that
is
porn
– so
they
should
go
ahead
and
celebrate
their
win.
